Why Six Month Checkups?

During WWI, poor oral hygiene was the most common medical reason soldiers were unable to enlist. Oral health was declared a risk to national security, and a group of dentists was called in to determine how to handle the dental health crisis. The solution they come up with was regular dental health checkups and professional cleanings. The first dental hygienists had been trained in the early 1900s, and by 1914 when the decision was made, dental hygienists were becoming fixtures in most dentistry practices. The dentists stated that if patients were seen before they had problems, it was more likely that they could be treated effectively.

Once dentists determined how they should help improve oral health, they had to determine the when. When should patients receive these checkups? With government officials and corporate sponsors increasing pressure for an answer to this national health emergency, the dentists took a guess. Keep in mind, this was a well educated guess since these doctors had seen thousands of patients and based their recommendation on their own successful cases, but at the end of the day, it started as a guess. In order to help get the word out about preventive care, Pepsodent launched a series of print ads recommending biennial dental health care exams. Eventually, dental insurance providers began covering twice annual checkups and cleanings further reinforcing the six month checkup, and the rest is history.

Do I Need a Six Month Checkup with my Dunwoody General Dentist?

100 years later, we’re still adhering to the twice a year rule, but now, there’s research to support the guess work of these long ago dentists. So, the short answer to the question of whether or not six month checkups are necessary is: yes. Some of the main reasons dentists continue to recommend twice a year appointments include:

Consistency – because patients visit the office on a more consistent basis, our team notices dental irregularities more quickly and can diagnoses oral health issues at the earliest stages.

Conservative care – because early diagnosis is possible, Dr. Rodgers provides the most conservative treatment options.

Comprehensive treatment – possibly detrimental oral health conditions like gum disease and oral cancer are 100% treatable when caught early. Treating oral health issues that affect whole body health before they can compromise overall wellbeing is just one way our team provides comprehensive care for patients.
